Berberis julianae SEEDS

Berberis julianae seeds grow into Julian’s barberry a very spiny, dense, evergreen shrub native to the subtropical biome of central and southern China, including Hubei, Sichuan, Yunnan, Guizhou and Guangxi provinces. Described by C.K.Schneid. (Camillo Karl Schneider, 18761951, German botanist and expert on Berberis). The epithet julianae honours a person named Juliana associated with the collections. One of the most robustly armed of all barberries: the three-branched stipular spines are particularly long and sharp (to 4 cm), and the stiff, spiny-toothed, glossy dark green leaves make it an almost impenetrable hedge plant. Pale yellow flowers in dense clusters in spring; blue-black waxy berries in autumn. Hardy to at least 20C. Family Berberidaceae.

Full sun to partial shade; adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils; very cold-hardy. Excellent as an impenetrable hedge or barrier plant.
