Described by Swartz (Olof Peter Swartz, 17601818, Swedish botanist). The epithet grandiflora means ‘large-flowered’ an understatement for a species that produces some of the largest individual flowers in the entire plant kingdom, with a perigone limb 3040 cm wide and a pendant utricle tail to 50 cm or more. Used as a medicine and for environmental purposes; important host plant for tropical swallowtail butterflies. NOTE: Aristolochia gorgona M.A.Blanco, also sold in this store, is currently treated as a synonym of this species.
