The species was described by DC. (de Candolle); the cultivar name atropurpurea means ‘very dark purple’ (from Latin), referring to the deep reddish-purple leaf colour that is the defining character of this selection. Berberis thunbergii honours Carl Peter Thunberg (17431828), the Swedish botanist who studied the Japanese flora during his posting at Dejima trading post (17751776), one of the few Westerners to study Japan’s plants during the period of isolation. The species develops small, yellow flowers in spring and persistent bright red berries in autumn, with brilliant red autumn foliage. IMPORTANT NOTE: seeds from cultivar plants may NOT breed true seedlings from cv. atropurpurea seeds are highly variable and may produce green-leaved or purple-leaved plants. Family Berberidaceae.
