The name comes from Carolus (Charles). According to medieval folklore, Charlemagne, or Charles the Great, used this root to cure the ills of his troops. Stemless or short-stemmed, pure white blossoms with silver bracts when mature. Since the blossoms open on dry days and close in the evenings and rainy days, we get the common name, Weather Thistle.
