Buddleja asiatica seeds grow into the Asian butterfly bush a vigorous, semi-evergreen shrub or small tree native to the subtropical and tropical biome from the Himalaya (India, Nepal, Bhutan) east through China, Indo-China and Malesia to the Philippines, northern Australia and the Pacific Islands. Described by Lour. (Joo de Loureiro, 17171791, Portuguese botanist who worked in Vietnam). The epithet asiatica means ‘from Asia’. Bears long, drooping or arching spikes of small, intensely fragrant white flowers one of the most sweetly scented species in the genus; flowers produced in winter and spring. Vigorous shrub to 4 m or more; lance-shaped grey-green leaves. Used in traditional medicine across its Asian range. Family Scrophulariaceae (previously Buddlejaceae).
Full sun; well-drained soils; warm subtropical to tropical conditions; some drought tolerance. Prune hard after flowering to maintain shape.
Buddleja asiatica the Asian butterfly bush is the most wide-ranging Buddleja in Asia, its extraordinary natural range from the Himalayan foothills to Australia and the Pacific making it one of the most geographically widespread shrubs in the genus, its intensely fragrant white winter flower spikes filling the air with a sweet scent that distinguishes it from the familiar purple summer-flowering butterfly bushes of temperate gardens.
