Cercis canadensis seeds grow into the eastern redbud one of the most celebrated and widely planted spring-flowering trees of North America, native to the temperate biome from the Pelee Island of south-eastern Canada south through the central and eastern United States to north-eastern and east-central Mexico. In early spring, before the heart-shaped leaves emerge, the bare branches and even the trunk are covered in dense clusters of vivid rose-pink, pea-like flowers in one of the most dramatic cauliflorous flowering displays of any temperate tree. The flowers are followed by the distinctive flat, papery seed pods that persist into winter. Three subspecies are recognised: subsp. canadensis (eastern form), subsp. texensis (Texas redbud) and subsp. mexicana (Mexican redbud). Family Fabaceae.
Full sun to partial shade; adaptable to a wide range of well-drained soils; cold-hardy; drought-tolerant once established. One of the finest small trees for four-season interest in temperate and warm-temperate gardens.
