Dierama medium seeds grow into a medium-sized wand flower a cormous geophyte native to the subtropical biome of South Africa, from the Eastern Cape and southern KwaZulu-Natal. The epithet medium means ‘medium’ or ‘intermediate’, referring to the intermediate stature of this species between the smaller and taller Dierama. Described by N.E. Brown (Nicholas Edward Brown, 18491934, one of the great Kew botanists). Produces the characteristic wiry, arching, wand-like scapes of the genus bearing pendant funnel-shaped flowers in pink to magenta shades. A good mid-sized species for garden use where the full height of larger Dierama would be excessive. All Dierama are cormous geophytes growing from corms, not bulbs. Family Iridaceae.
Full sun; well-drained, moist soils; warm subtropical conditions; tolerates moderate frost. Best left undisturbed once established.
Dierama medium is the medium wand flower a perfectly proportioned mid-sized South African geophyte whose pink-magenta pendant flowers on gracefully arching wiry scapes bring an effortless elegance to subtropical and temperate gardens.
