Dioon edule var. edule is the nominate variety of this ancient Mexican cycad, native to the arid and semi-arid slopes of eastern Mexico. It forms a compact, subterranean or low above-ground trunk, topped with a symmetrical crown of rigid, upright fronds. The leaflets are deep green, linear, and sharply pointed, with prominent margins and a leathery texture. Its slow-growing nature and striking, architectural silhouette make it a long-lived, drought-tolerant addition to dry gardens and xeriscapes.
