Juglans nigra seeds grow into the black walnut one of the most valuable hardwood trees in North America, native to the temperate biome from south-eastern Canada south through central and eastern U.S.A. (as far west as Texas and South Dakota). The most prized North American hardwood deep chocolate-brown to near-black, with exceptionally rich grain used for gunstocks, furniture, cabinetry and fine veneer, commanding premium prices. Produces distinctive, very thick-husked spherical nuts with an intensely flavoured kernel used in American baking and ice cream. All parts produce juglone, a powerful allelopathic compound that inhibits the growth of many competing plants in the root zone a characteristic well-documented by gardeners who find certain plants will not grow beneath black walnut trees.
