Nyssa sylvatica

Nyssa sylvatica, commonly known as Black Tupelo, is a striking deciduous tree native to eastern North America, admired for its architectural form and dazzling seasonal displays. Nyssa sylvatica is a medium-sized tree typically reaches 1020 meters in height, featuring a straight, often slender trunk and a broad, horizontal branching structure that becomes more irregular and sculptural with age. Its lustrous, dark green foliage is leathery and ovate, turning brilliant shades of scarlet, orange, and yellow in autumnmaking it one of the most spectacular native trees for fall color. The bark of Nyssa sylvatica is deeply furrowed and dark gray to black, resembling alligator hide in mature specimens. In spring, Nyssa sylvatica produces small, greenish-white flowers that are inconspicuous but highly valuable to pollinators. These give way to blue-black drupes that are eagerly consumed by birds and wildlife. Its adaptability to wet soils and tolerance for drier uplands make it both ecologically significant and horticulturally versatile, while its deep taproot ensures longevity and wind resistance.
