Phoenix theophrasti subsp. golkoyana seeds grow into a remarkable date palm from south-western Turkey. Scientifically described in 2019, this subspecies of the theophrasti palm grows in a small relic population on the Glky Peninsula near Bodrum, on the Aegean coast of Turkey. Gardeners prize it for its striking appearance and rarity, as it represents a distinct, recently described population of Theophrastus’ date palm.
The mature Phoenix theophrasti produces elegant, feather-like (pinnate) fronds with a lush green colour. It thrives in warm Mediterranean climates and features a sturdy trunk with a distinctive texture. The golkoyana subspecies is at least as cold-hardy as the Cretan date palm, making it a robust choice for gardens and collections. In addition, this Anatolian palm adds an exotic touch with its refined silhouette and drought tolerance.
The theophrasti palm is a fascinating plant that brings both beauty and heritage to any setting. As a relative of Europe’s native date palm, it offers a unique alternative to larger palms without sacrificing ornamental appeal. Its presence enriches landscapes with a touch of Aegean charm and botanical rarity, making it a prized specimen for palm enthusiasts.
