Raphionacme madiensis seeds grow into a tuberous geophyte native to East and Central Africa named after the Madi district of northern Uganda, where the type specimens were collected by the botanist Spencer Le Marchant Moore in the early twentieth century. This member of Apocynaceae develops an underground tuberous caudex from which seasonal twining stems arise bearing small leaves and the delicate flowers typical of the milkweed subfamily. It grows in the seasonally dry tropical biome of the East and Central African interior, not in Madagascar as sometimes erroneously cited.
Sharp drainage, warm conditions and a dry rest when dormant replicate the seasonal conditions of its East African habitat.
Raphionacme madiensis is an authentic East African tuberous caudiciform from the dry savannah zone of Uganda and surrounding region a botanically interesting member of the milkweed subfamily of Apocynaceae for collectors who want diversity within the genus.
