Schinus molle seeds grow into the Peruvian pepper tree or California pepper tree one of the most widely planted and naturalised trees in the subtropical world, native to the subtropical biome from Peru south through Bolivia, northern Chile, southern Brazil to north-eastern Argentina. The small, round, pink-to-rose-red berries are the source of commercial pink peppercorns used as a spice across the world, with a fruity, mildly peppery, resinous flavour quite different from true black pepper. The tree is dioecious (separate male and female trees) and the female produces the characteristic drooping clusters of berries. The feathery, pinnate, strongly aromatic leaves and gracefully weeping branches make it one of the most recognisable ornamental trees in warm-climate gardens globally.
