The epithet ionantha means ‘violet-flowered’ (Greek ion = violet + anthos = flower). A small, compact, atmospheric epiphyte or lithophyte covered in silver trichomes that absorb all moisture and nutrients from the air no soil required. Famous for the spectacular colour change at flowering: the inner leaves turn brilliant red, pink or orange as flowering begins, while small violet tubular flowers emerge from the centre. Monocarpic but produces offsets (pups). Family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Tillandsioideae.
