Zantedeschia aethiopica ‘Highveld’ seeds grow into a Highveld selection of the calla lily or arum lily a tuberous geophyte native to the seasonally dry tropical biome of South Africa, Lesotho, Eswatini and Mozambique. Originally described by Linnaeus (1753) as Calla aethiopica; transferred to the genus Zantedeschia by Sprengel (1826) the genus named in honour of Giovanni Zantedeschi (ca. 17731846), Italian priest and botanist. ‘Highveld’ indicates a provenance or selection from the South African Highveld (the high interior plateau). One of the world’s most iconic and widely known flowers, grown commercially as a cut flower and used in countless ornamental, medicinal and cultural contexts globally. Contains calcium oxalate all parts cause irritation if ingested. Naturalised and invasive in several regions including Australia, New Zealand, the Azores and California. Important: seeds from ‘Highveld’ will not breed true for the selection’s characteristics. Family Araceae.
