Ziziphus jujuba ‘Cleaned’ seeds grow into the Chinese jujube or red date one of the most ancient and important fruit trees in Chinese civilisation, native to northern and central China where it has been cultivated for at least 4,000 years, and now grown in subtropical and warm-temperate regions worldwide. The epithet jujuba derives from the classical Latin zizyphus, itself from the Greek. The sweet, crisp fruits bright red when fully ripe, drying to a wrinkled dark red-brown are consumed fresh, dried, candied and brewed into tea across East Asia, and are a major ingredient in Chinese traditional medicine (jujube dates are one of the most widely used medicinal fruits in TCM). ‘Cleaned’ seeds have had the fruit pulp removed. Absolutely NOT to be confused with ‘Cordia jujuba’, which is an entirely different plant in a different family. Family Rhamnaceae.
Full sun; drought-tolerant; cold-hardy; adaptable to a very wide range of soils. One of the most rewarding edible fruit trees for warm-temperate to subtropical gardens.
Ziziphus jujuba is the Chinese red date one of the oldest and most deeply embedded fruit trees in Chinese culture and traditional medicine, whose 4,000-year history of cultivation and exceptional versatility as a food and medicine make it one of the most rewarding and culturally significant fruit trees available to warm-temperate gardeners worldwide.
